Women's top post-pregnancy body concerns revolve around stretch marks, excess skin and loss of muscularity in the abdominal area.

When Mommy Wants a Makeover

Be Healthy

Pregnancy completely transforms a woman’s body – you’re growing a whole new being after all!

But sometimes, reminders of those nine months stick around a little too long after baby’s arrival. And no matter what you seem to do, you just can’t get your body to bounce back to the way it was before baby, or breastfeeding.

If you feel you’ve exhausted all your options, a “mommy makeover” through plastic surgery may be an attractive option.

“Generally, a mommy makeover includes an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and a breast procedure (a breast lift or breast augmentation),” says Dr. David Cho, a board-certified plastic surgeon with Straub Medical Center.

  • An abdominoplasty flattens the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin, dramatically reducing the appearance of a protruding belly.

  • A breast augmentation enhances the size and shape of breasts through implants.

  • A breast lift does just as its name suggests – raises and reshapes sagging breasts.

“Pregnancy greatly affects the abdominal region, and women may be concerned with stretch marks, excess skin and loss of abdominal musculature. Additionally, breastfeeding affects the structure and shape of the breast, and women may be concerned with changes in breast size or breast shape,” Cho explains, noting that ideal candidates for any surgical procedure are healthy and have realistic expectations of what the final outcome will be.

Achieving a wonderful cosmetic outcome is always my top priority. However, patient safety is equally important."

If you are planning to have more children, Cho advises it may be a good idea to postpone your mommy makeover, as pregnancy is likely to offset the results of the procedure.

“Achieving a wonderful cosmetic outcome is always my top priority. However, patient safety is equally important,” says Cho. “Straub Medical Center is one of only 13 hospitals nationwide that received national recognition for Outstanding Patient Experience, Patient Safety and Hospital Clinical Distinction. We really pride ourselves on patient safety in our plastic surgery clinic and private operating rooms.”

Straub Plastic Surgery’s operating rooms are customized for maximum patient safety, privacy and comfort. They are physically connected to the main hospital, providing patients direct access to state-of-the-art hospital equipment and personnel.
