A Little Girl with an Undimmable Light: Aurelia’s Story of Courage, Hope, and Committed Care
Aurelia Awa's life began with a fight most people will never face, let alone at 2 weeks old.
In those first fragile days, when most newborns are just opening their eyes to the world, she was confronting acute myeloid leukemia. But at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, a team of specialists fought alongside her, guiding her through the earliest battle of her life.
When the cancer was behind her, another challenge emerged – bilateral optic nerve atrophy. It took her sight, but not her vision. Aurelia learned to navigate the world without seeing it, relying on her other senses and her own intuition to understand the people and places around her.
Her blindness became part of her story, but never the limit of it.
Then, before her 10th birthday, her heart faltered – twice. Heart failure threatened to stop the momentum she had fought so hard to build. Again, Kapiolani's teams stepped in, stabilizing her, protecting her, and giving her the chance to keep growing into herself.
Through every setback, Aurelia remained unmistakably effervescent. She inspires not because of what she has endured, but because of how she continues to meet the world: with joy, curiosity, and a presence that leaves an imprint on everyone she encounters.
While her journey isn’t finished – she will need more heart care as she grows – Aurelia's story is not defined by illness. It is defined by resilience, by expert care, and by a spark that refuses to dim.
