
Hawaii Pacific Health Medical Group (HPHMG) has welcomed two new physician leaders to its experienced team.
Dr. Tumaini Rucker Coker has been selected as the new chief of pediatrics for HPHMG. She will also serve as chair of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine’s Pediatrics Department.
Dr. Coker comes to HPHMG from the University of Washington School of Medicine where she served as professor and division head of general pediatrics. Dr. Coker was the inaugural research director for Seattle Children’s Center for Diversity and Health Equity and served as the co-director of the University of Washington’s National Institutes of Health-funded Child Health Equity Research Fellowship. As a general pediatrician and health service researcher, Dr. Coker conducts community-partnered research to improve the delivery of primary care for children in low-income communities. She is a member of the United States Preventive Services Task Force and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Matthew Gadbaw has been named chief of hospital-based medicine for HPHMG. Dr. Gadbaw brings more than 20 years of leadership experience from the Providence Health System in Oregon, where he most recently served as executive medical director for hospitalist medicine. In that role, he led more than 200 clinicians and spearheaded initiatives like their telehospitalist program and various quality improvement projects. He holds degrees in biology and English literature from Stanford University and earned his medical degree from the University of Washington. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center.
