COURSE INFORMATION:
This course offers much needed education related to meeting the unique needs of the pediatric hematology and oncology patient.


OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the most common blood disorders and pediatric malignancies.
2. Discuss abnormal assessment and laboratory findings and associated nursing implications in children diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders.
3. Discuss the unique needs of adolescents and young adults with cancer.
4. Describe common side effects of chemotherapy and biotherapy, as well as evidence-based nursing interventions for their management.
5. Discuss the impact of research on the survival of children with cancer.
6. Discuss the evidence-based nursing management of the most common complications associated with CVAD.
7. Identify the most common oncologic emergencies and nursing interventions.
8. Discuss diagnosis and nursing care of children and adolescent s with sickle cell disease, Thalassemia and other hematologic disorders.
9. Discuss the special aspects of the nurse’s role in the care of the child, adolescent or young adult undergoing Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Transplant (HPCT).
10. Identify Supportive Care approaches to relate to toxicities of therapy.
11. Identify the side effects associated with radiation therapy as they relate to radiation field and age of child undergoing radiation.
12. Describe the symptoms, treatment and prognosis of four frequently occurring solid tumors of childhood.
13. Discuss the clinical presentation and diagnostic procedures specific to Neuroblastoma.
14. Describe the late effects associated with treatment of childhood cancer.
15. Discuss the role of the nurse in providing patient education regarding fertility risks and preservation options.
16. Discuss complementary alternative medicines’ role in supporting patient and family through treatment.


CONTINUING EDUCATION:
In support of improving patient care, Hawai‘i Pacific Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Hawai‘i Pacific Health designates this live activity for a maximum of 21.5 contact hours for nurses.
