Service Overview

An OB-GYN, short for obstetrician-gynecologist, is a doctor who cares for a woman's reproductive health through many stages of life. They can help with routine checkups, periods, pelvic health, birth control, pregnancy, childbirth, and care after delivery. Some OB-GYNs also support patients through menopause.

Whether you need an annual visit, have a health concern, or are planning for pregnancy, an OB-GYN can help you understand your options and feel supported in your care.

OB-GYN, Obstetrician, or Gynecologist: What's the Difference?

Even though their care often overlaps, obstetricians and gynecologists have different areas of focus.

Obstetricians care for patients during pregnancy, childbirth, and recovery after birth.

Gynecologists focus on reproductive health, including periods, pelvic health, birth control, and menopause.

A doctor who is trained in both areas is called an OB-GYN. This means they can provide many types of reproductive healthcare, from routine visits to pregnancy and delivery.

Conditions & Treatments

At Hawaiʻi Pacific Health, our OB-GYNs treat an array of conditions, including:

    • Fibroids
    • Heavy, painful, and/or irregular periods
    • Hormonal disorders
    • Incontinence
    • Infertility
    • Menopause
    • Ovarian cysts
    • Pelvic organ prolapse
    • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
    • Reproductive-related cancers
    • Sexually transmitted infections
    • Vaginal infections

Other services can include:

  • Routine annual gynecologic exams including pelvic, breast, and pap smears.
  • Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Treatment for abnormal pap smears.
  • Evaluation for and scheduling of major and minor gynecologic surgeries.

Our board-certified OB-GYNs can perform laser surgery, laparoscopy, and colposcopy, and provide surgical treatment of infertility and tubal reconstruction surgery.

They also can help with family planning and coordinate referrals for prenatal genetic counseling.

When Should I See an OB-GYN?

You can see an OB-GYN at any age if you have questions or concerns about your reproductive health. For teens, a first visit is often recommended between ages 13 and 15. This visit is usually a simple “meet and greet” where you can ask questions, learn what to expect, and start building a relationship with your doctor.

Cervical cancer screening usually starts at age 21. Your doctor may recommend earlier screening if you have a weakened immune system, such as from HIV/AIDS, or if you take medicine that lowers your immune system.

If you think you may be pregnant, call your OB-GYN’s office to schedule prenatal care. Starting care early can help you and your baby get the support you need from the beginning.
