About Bariatric Surgery

Bariatrics is the treatment and prevention of obesity. Being overweight or obese contributes to many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea and bone and joint problems. Bariatric treatments range from diet, exercise, and behavioral therapy to medications and surgery.

Our goal is to help each patient achieve greater health and an improved quality of life. Our bariatric specialists work with each patient to find the most appropriate and effective treatment plan.

The bariatric surgery program at Pali Momi Medical Center gives patients the chance to reach their weight-loss goals through a time-tested operation that has proven effective in treating the following obesity-related conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Dyslipidemia
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Coronary artery disease/hypertension
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sleep apnea

The fully accredited, comprehensive bariatric surgery program offers metabolic and bariatric surgery options focused on a lifestyle transformation to better health and wellness. In addition to surgery, patients receive 24/7 access to Pali Momi’s team of experts, as well as nutritional guidance, support groups and more.

Program Medical Director Mark Grief, MD, is a bariatric surgeon who trained under the renowned bariatric surgery pioneer Ninh T. Nguyen, MD, of UC Irvine. Grief has performed more than 400 bariatric operations and has more than 27 years of experience as a general surgeon in Hawaii.

The newest member of the bariatric surgery team is board-certified general surgeon Maria Ver, MD. A graduate of Maryknoll Schools, Ver completed her fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.

Additional Resources

A clear understanding of morbid obesity helps to guide physicians in selection of therapy for people who are overweight. A person is considered clinically severely obese (morbidly obese) when he or she is so heavy that the fat tissue load creates (or will create) other medical problems.

Nearly 80% of obese patients have one or more of the following conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Dyslipidemia
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Coronary Artery Disease
  • Hypertension
  • Osteoarthritis

Bariatric surgery has been proven effective in treating these conditions. In one study of 104 patients at 1 year post-operation, 90.8% of patient conditions were improved or completely eliminated.

The gastric bypass procedure can successfully start patients on the road to recovery from morbid obesity, but the adjustments after surgery are tough, and surgery has inherent risk. Furthermore, surgery alone will not ensure long-term success. In order to get down to a healthy weight, patients must adjust their eating habits and exercise patterns. Regular attendance at support groups and workshops is highly recommended.
