Finding the Right Footwear for Your Favorite Activities
Published Dec. 26, 2024
Whether you're relaxing at home, playing sports or working long shifts, the right shoes are crucial for maintaining foot health and comfort.
Key Takeaways
- Barefoot and slippers may not always be best. They’re part of everyday life in Hawaiʻi, but they may not offer enough support or protection for everyone.
- Support matters more than you think. The right cushioning, stability, and fit can help prevent pain, improve comfort, and lower your risk of injury.
- The best shoe for you depends on how you move. From work shifts to workouts, the right fit starts with your daily routine, foot structure, and activity level.
Whether you're relaxing at home, playing sports or working long shifts, the right shoes are crucial for maintaining foot health and comfort.
And while rubber slippers are a popular choice for many in Hawaiʻi, they might not be the best option for your feet.
Dr. Tyler Chihara, a Hawaiʻi Pacific Health Medical Group board-certified podiatrist with Wilcox Medical Center and Kauaʻi Medical Clinic, appeared on Hawaiʻi News Now to discuss the importance of selecting the right shoes for specific activities and how to choose footwear based on your foot structure and body type.
Finding the Right Fit
Step one, according to Chihara, is to opt for footwear that aligns with your activity and foot needs to ensure proper support and prevent discomfort.
Although walking barefoot or wearing slippers is common in Hawaiʻi, both practices come with pros and cons.
"Our feet are designed to adapt to various terrains, and going barefoot can stimulate the small muscles and nerves in the feet and lower legs," Chihara explained.
Consider Health Conditions When Choosing Shoe Styles
However, as we age, the cushioning in our feet naturally diminishes, which can make walking without shoes less comfortable.
"For individuals with conditions like diabetes, circulatory issues, or nerve problems, going barefoot can be risky and should be avoided," Chihara advised.
When discomfort arises from improper footwear, choosing the right shoe is essential.
"If pain is concentrated in the ball of the foot, shoes with extra cushioning can help alleviate discomfort and provide better support," Chihara said.
He added that a growing trend in recovery sandals has raised some concern. Though these sandals are designed with thicker, softer midsoles for comfort, they can sometimes put strain on muscles and joints, particularly for those with balance issues.
"These shoes tend to wobble more, increasing the risk of instability," he said.
Select Shoes Based on Your Individual Needs
For people working long hours in fields like health care or hospitality, finding the right footwear is crucial for both comfort and safety. Some jobs require slip-resistant shoes, while others may need more structure.
"Depending on your profession, foot structure and body type, it's important to choose shoes that can handle the long hours and miles spent standing or walking," Chihara said.
Footwear is also vital for injury prevention and performance during physical activities.
For pickleball players, Chihara recommends shoes with a firm heel counter, adequate cushioning, and a roomy fit to avoid foot compression.
For walking or light jogging, cushioning and support are key, while stability and control become more important for more-intense activities.
When shopping for shoes, it's essential to find the right fit.
"It's hard to gauge a shoe's fit online, so I always advise people to try them on in-store to ensure they feel right before purchasing," Chirara said.
