Arrhythmias
Arrhythmias occur when there is a problem with the electrical system that is supposed to regulate a steady heartbeat. With an impaired electrical system, your heart may beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly.
Types of arrhythmias can include:
Sometimes genetic variations within your DNA can affect the heart cells that send electrical signals that control your heartbeat. This condition is called hereditary arrythmia syndrome (HAS).
There are different types of HAS depending on the type of genetic disease you have. Some forms of HAS can include:
Treatment Options Available at Hawaiʻi Pacific Health Heart Centers
Our Heart Centers teams are highly trained and experienced to assist with routine as well as the most complex procedures. They monitor and detect arrhythmias using the help of several different devices for accurate results including Holter monitors, Ziopatch, loop recorders, and 12-lead monitoring electrocardiogram (EKG).
Exercise stress tests are also offered to record your heartbeat while you walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike. Results can tell doctors if you have an irregular heart rhythm.
Options we provide to treat arrythmias can include:
- Device therapy (pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillator)\
- Cardiac ablation
- Cardioversion
- Echocardiogram
- Medication
- Surgery
Pediatric Electrophysiology
Pediatric electrophysiology addresses abnormal heart rhythms in children and adolescents.
Our program at Kapiʻolani Medical Center offers EKG, Holter and event monitors, extended patch monitoring, and exercise testing. This clarifies symptoms such as palpitations or syncope.
Management for these conditions can include:
- Observation
- Lifestyle adjustments
- Medications
- Minimally invasive procedures, such as catheter ablation
- Device therapy (pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators)
We use age-appropriate sedation and mapping technologies to improve precision and reduce procedure time. We give guidance for return to play with families, schools, and athletics so kids stay active, safely.
If your child develops an arrhythmia, remember this: Diagnosing and treating these disorders in children is our expertise. So, you’ve come to the right place.
