Service Overview

Doctors who specialize in problems with the urinary tract and the male reproductive system are urologists. This includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, testicles and penis. Urologists provide medical and surgical care for adults and children with urological conditions.

Our urologists approach each patient’s care with both medical innovation and sensitivity. Whenever possible we use minimally invasive procedures to minimize pain and recovery time.

Conditions & Treatments

Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the urinary tract in both genders, and with the genital tract or reproductive system in the male.

Urologists treat:

    • infertility
    • cancer
    • kidney stones
    • prostate problems
    • erectile dysfunction
    • infection

    • urinary incontinence (leakage of urine)

    • congenital conditions

Surgical Treatments for Different Cancers

Bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular cancers are all considered urological. All are relatively common and treatable if detected early. At Hawaiʻi Pacific Health, our patients have access to state-of-the-art urologic oncology programs, specialists and research.

Prostate Cancer

While this is the most common cancer in men, most prostate cancer is slow-growing and the current survival rate is 97 percent.

Bladder Cancer

The wall of the bladder is lined with two types of cells—transitional and squamous. Over 90 percent of bladder cancers begin in the transitional cells, which is called transitional cell carcinoma.

Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer appears to be on the rise. One reason may be an increase in diagnosis as advanced imaging techniques has led to the accidental discovery of more kidney cancers. When kidney cancer is detected early, as with most other cancers, it’s easier to treat.

Testicular Cancer

Testicular cancer starts in the male gland known as a testicle or testis (two are called testicles, or testes). This cancer is rare, very treatable, and with early diagnosis can be cured.

Diagnosis & Treatment for Urological Cancers

Hawaiʻi Pacific Health offeres:

    • Screening exams
    • Diagnostic imaging
    • Transrectal ultrasound and biopsy
    • Second opinions and treatments
    • Robotic surgery
    • Radiation therapy

Pediatric Urology

Whether an everyday issue or a rare condition, we offer children expert care.

Our board-certified urologists specialize in:

    • Urinary infections and incontinence
    • Prenatal urology disorders
    • Genitourinary surgical reconstruction
    • Minimally invasive urological surgery.
    • Kidney stones
    • Neurological problems of the bladder
    • Hernia and hydrocele
    • Undescended testicles
    • Genital abnormalities: hypospadias, epispadias and intersex (sexual differentiation) conditions

Urinary infections and incontinence

We perform diagnostic testing and treatment to assess the problem and recommend a solution. We see children for day and nighttime elimination problems (both urinary and bowel). Services include multi-channel video urodynamics, biofeedback, and patient and family education.

Prenatal urology disorders

This discipline consists of the prenatal identification of problems with a baby’s genitals or urinary system. This advancement allows us to better prepare parents for what to expect and to plan a course of testing and treatment before a baby is born. As a result, parents can play a more active role in decision-making for their baby’s care.

Genitourinary surgical reconstruction

This is the micro and macro surgical correction of congenital disorders of male and female genitalia. It includes hypospadias, epispadias, and disorders of sexual differentiation. It is also known as intersex disorders or sexual ambiguity).

Minimally invasive urological surgery

A laparoscopic surgery to correct disorders of the kidney, ureter, bladder, and gonads (both testes and ovaries).

Patient Resources

Prostate Cancer Screening

Men should discuss prostate cancer screening with their physician. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Screening can find the cancer before it spreads, offering a good chance for cure. The American Urological Association and the American Cancer Society both recommend yearly screening. Because most prostate cancers grow slowly, men aged 50 to 65 benefit the most from screenings.
