Wall of Hope

The Wall of Hope photography exhibition was an idea born from the Kapiʻolani staff as a way to share stories of patients who have endured and – more importantly – overcome a health crisis with current patients and their families as they brave their own medical journeys.

Located on the second floor of the medical center across from the former dining room, the Wall of Hope features portraits of patients ranging from infants to adults. Each photograph is accompanied by the participant’s story of hope.

Meet the 15 participants featured in the 2023 Wall of Hope and what being on the wall means to them.

Portions of the 2023 Wall of Hope photography exhibit were photographed on the grounds of ʻIolani Palace.

Built by King David Kalākaua, ʻIolani Palace is where his wife, Queen Kapiʻolani, first envisioned a maternity hospital to provide proper quality care for Hawaiian women and their newborns. Here, she hosted magnificent galas and lūʻau to raise funds for the creation of the Kapiʻolani Maternity Home, which would eventually become Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children.

Now, more than a century later, to see these Kapiʻolani patients – all of whom have overcome some medical adversity – happy and healthy on these very same grounds is, indeed, Queen Kapiʻolani's dream come full circle.
