Biography and Interests
Biography
Dr. Hiroo Kinami is a pediatric and congenital heart surgeon who cares for newborns, children and adults born with heart conditions. He specializes in surgery for heart problems that people are born with, including complex conditions that can require lifelong care.
Dr. Kinami completed his medical training in Japan and pursued advanced pediatric cardiac surgery training in both Japan and the United States. He has trained and practiced at leading children’s hospitals, including Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. He has extensive experience in congenital heart surgery, neonatal heart surgery and heart valve repair.
As director of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Dr. Kinami is committed to providing advanced, compassionate heart care close to home for families in Hawaii. He believes in a team-based, family-centered approach and works closely with cardiologists, nurses and specialists to support patients and families throughout every stage of care.
Future Research & Innovation Interests
Dr. Kinami is actively involved in future-focused projects aimed at improving access to high-quality heart care across Hawaii and the Pacific region. His interests include collaborative blood flow analysis using advanced cardiac imaging and simulation technology to support surgical planning for congenital heart disease.
He is developing educational initiatives using virtual reality and 3D-printed heart models to help medical professionals, patients, families and the local community better understand congenital heart conditions and treatments.
In addition, Dr. Kinami is working toward building remote diagnosis and consultation systems using secure IT platforms. These efforts aim to expand access to specialized congenital heart expertise for patients on neighbor islands and in the Pacific region, including Guam, Saipan, Micronesia and American Samoa.
