Biography and Interests

Biography

Edward W. Fong received his medical degree from the University of Hawaii-Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine. He went on to complete both his internship and residency in the field of Pediatrics at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Arizona.

After finishing his residency, Dr. Fong remained in Tucson to pursue a fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology at the University of Arizona. During his fellowship, Dr. Fong was awarded a National Institute of Health K30 Clinical Research Curriculum Award. He also completed the University of Arizona Clinical Research Training Program.
Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Fong joined Bay Area Pediatric Pulmonary Medical Corporation as a Pediatric Pulmonologist where he attended at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco and University of California Benioff Children’s Hospital at Oakland (UCBCHO). In 2015, Dr. Fong joined Stanford University’s Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor.

Dr. Fong is an avid teacher and lecturer. In addition to being the UCBCHO and Stanford Children’s Health Director of Resident and Medical Student Pediatric Pulmonary Clinical Rotation/Clerkship at UCBCHO and CPMC, he was an active participant and leader in the UCBCHO Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship program, mentoring 8 pediatric pulmonary fellows. He has given international and national lectures on the respiratory manifestations of Morquio A Syndrome.

Dr. Fong’s research interests are in asthma and cystic fibrosis. He has previously received funding for an Investigator Sponsored Trial from Genentech, Inc. to study the effects of Dornase Alfa in children admitted to the hospital in status asthmaticus. He has also participated in many Cystic Fibrosis studies as well as served as the research mentor for 4 of the 8 pediatric pulmonary fellows. Dr. Fong was a long-standing member of the UCBCHO Institutional Review Board as well as serving as the Associate Medical Director of the UCBCHO Cystic Fibrosis Center and as the Medical Director of the Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratories at CPMC, UCBCHO, and Stanford Children’s Health in Emeryville.
