OFFERING INFORMATION:
Providing Comprehensive Cancer Care with Aloha in an Island State
Does where you live affect your outcome after a cancer diagnosis? There is data that indicates geographical distances from cancer treatment centers impact mortality rates. What does that mean for Hawaii residents who live on separate islands in one of the most isolated communities in the world? Isolation by ocean can be a significant barrier to latest treatments and to the care required for significant side effects.
This conference will present data and background on the impact of geographical disparities specific to cancer care and outcomes in Hawai‘i. Nurses from rural communities will discuss innovative support and resources for the geographic challenges encountered by their patients.
Access to certain emerging therapies that are often not available in Hawai‘i and how that might change, will be presented by oncology leaders. Rapid changes in pharmaceutical agents and education on oral oncolytics will also be discussed.
The disparities are challenging, and a zip code doesn’t tell the whole story (ONS Voice, April 1, 2020).
OBJECTIVES:
1. Make appropriate referrals to community resources for patients who experience barriers in obtaining cancer care.
2. Identify and discuss disparities in cancer outcomes based on geographical issues particular to Hawaii.
3. Apply knowledge gained of recently approved immunotherapy agents for cancer care.
4. Provide example for the multidisciplinary cancer care team, of the unique cancer care disparities for the individual islands that encompass the state of Hawai’i.
