10th Anniversary Celebratory Academic Meeting
January 2003
The Retina Center at Pali Momi celebrated its 10th anniversary with an exciting academic meeting on January 17 and 18, 2003, with an international vitreoretinal symposium and a world-class faculty. "We were truly privileged and honored to have four giants in our field, who were not only able to present their expertise on their topics, but were also able to interact and discuss controversial issues," said Dr. Gregg T. Kokame, medical director of The Retina Center at Pali Momi.
Dr. Carmen Puliafito, chairman of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Miami School of Medicine, is a recognized expert on lasers, photodynamic therapy and pharmacologic therapy, as well as a co-inventor of optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Dr. Harry Flynn, professor and Gass Chair at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, is a well recognized authority on management of endophthalmitis and cataract surgical complications.
Dr. Yasuo Tano, chairman of the Department of Opthamology at the Osaka University Medical School, presented the Jackson Memorial Lecture at the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2002 on pathologic myopia, and is an internationally recognized innovator in instrumentation for vitreoretinal surgery and macular translocation surgery.
Dr. Hilel Lewis, chairman of the Cole Eye Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, is a leader in the development of macular translocation surgery, and the management of subretinal hemorrhage.
This meeting was the highlight of this 10th anniversary year, and was well attended by local and international ophthalmologists. The expertise of the doctors who attended the conference was also shared through a discussion of interesting cases at the fluorescein angiography and surgical conference, as well as through free papers presented by many of the doctors. The 10-year Visiting Retina Professor Lecture Program has had many important and pivotal leaders in retinal disease management, but never before were we able to bring so many leaders together in one forum in Honolulu.
