Now on Video: Breast Cancer Risks, Screening, Treatment.
Survival rates for breast cancer have been improving steadily and new evidence shows that early detection is playing a significant role. The findings are especially noteworthy for Hawaii women as our mammogram screening rates are among the lowest in the country. The Kapi'olani Breast Center has developed a new video with funding from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation focusing on breast cancer risk factors, mammogram screening and treatment.
As survival rates climb, there has been uncertainty about how much of the success is attributable to better drugs and how much can be assigned to early detection. After looking at 25 years of cancer records nationwide, researchers found that smaller tumor size accounted for 61 percent of survival rate improvement when cancer was found before it spread beyond the breast.
