Working diligently and traveling throughout the Islands for many years to raise the necessary funds, Queen Kapi'olani saw her cherished dream come true in June of 1890 when the Kapi'olani Maternity Home opened its doors.
The Queen's motto, "Strive for the Highest," lives on today through the Kapi'olani Health Foundation. Kapi'olani continues its commitment to care for the women of Hawaii and has made important strides to address women's health beyond the childbearing years.
Most recently, Kapi'olani opened the state's only Breast Center dedicated to the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Over the past several years, Kapi'olani has invested well over $10 million to build its specialized breast health program. More than 800 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in Hawaii.
Kapi'olani is also home to the state's only women's center which celebrates its 12th anniversary this year. The first center of its kind in Hawaii, the Kapi'olani Women's Center is committed to preventing illness and maintaining women's health offering a broad range of services to address the changing needs of today's woman, from heart screening to treatment for obesity to osteoporosis prevention.
Another first in women's health for Hawaii was the opening of the Kapi'olani Women's Cancer Center for the treatment of gynecological cancer. The Center has brought national clinical trials to the Islands in cooperation with the National Cancer Institute and the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, elevating the level of care in Hawaii and eliminating the need for women to travel to the mainland.
