Incontinence?
Incontinence is among the most common medical conditions, affecting millions of women at some time in their lives.
If left unaddressed, it can affect every aspect of a woman's life from her emotional health to her relationships with family and friends.
What is incontinence?
The uncontrollable loss of urine is a common and treatable condition. More than 10 million Americans experience loss of bladder control. However, it is very treatable and can often be cured.
Types of incontinence
There are four types of incontinence, each with its own signs and symptoms:
- Urge incontinence
- Do you lose urine as soon as you feel a strong need to go to the bathroom?
- Do you leak urine if you hear running water, drink a small amount of liquid, or place hands in water?
- Do you go to the bathroom more than once or twice a night, or have you wet your bed in the last year?
- Stress incontinence
- Do you leak urine if you get up from a chair or bed, exercise, lift heavy objects, or cough or sneeze?
- Mixed incontinence
- Do you experience a combination of stress and urge incontinence signs and symptoms?
- Overflow incontinence
- Do you leak urine in small amounts during the day and night, almost continuously as a dribble?
- Do you feel as if you have to empty your bladder, but can't?
- When you're urinating, can you stop the flow?
