Kapi'olani's Acupuncture Program
The tranquil setting of the new Medi-Spa at the Kapi'olani Women's Center will put you at ease from the moment you arrive. Acupuncturist Dr. Melissa Yee combines acupuncture and massage therapy to promote health and alleviate common sources of discomfort and pain. The practice of acupuncture is over 5000 years old and is based on the theory that disorders and disease result from an imbalance in a person's energy or Qi (pronounced "chee"). Acupuncture seeks to identify and relieve the source of the problem, balance Yin and Yang, and not just treat symptoms.
Who will I see?
Melissa Yee
Acupuncturist
Melissa Yee is an acupuncturist licensed by the state of Hawaii which requires four years of training and extensive hands-on experience at an approved college of Oriental medicine, and successful completion of the licensure exam. In addition, Melissa holds her doctor of acupuncture degree, which entailed an additional year of training.
I don't like needles.
Acupuncture needles are special, disposable needles and are painless. They are extremely thin, like the finest thread and are used just once. The key to acupuncture is not in the size of the needle, but in the placement to clear blockages for free flow of energy and strengthen the immune system.
How many visits will I need?
This is a common question, and the answer is different for each woman. The first visit will be a thorough assessment and basic treatment. The practice of acupuncture and Oriental medicine examines all aspects of your life, from your emotional and physical health to diet and fitness. A personalized plan will be developed for you including acupuncture, massage therapy, and suggestions for your particular health concerns.
What does a visit include?
Therapy sessions are 50 minutes long and consist of a combination of massage therapy, acupuncture and counseling to meet your specific needs.
Will my insurance cover services?
Massage therapy and acupuncture are not covered by most health plans. If you have a complementary medicine rider, some of the services may be covered. Please check with your health plan. The fees are very reasonable. Please call 535-7000 for our current fees. You may also purchase a treatment series at a lower rate following the initial consultation. Please inquire at the time of your visit.
